MG MGB Technical - Starter Pinion - Are lucas parts interchangable?

I am rebuilding my inertia starter for my 67 BGT. The pinion drive is wrong and has wrecked the ring gear on the flywheel. I can't source a new pinion except from Rimmer Bros, who want £75. Given I can get a reconned starter, pressumably with a new pinion fitted, this does not seem reasonable. So onto the question.

Does any one know if the pinion drive from other inertia starters will be interchangeable if it has the same number of teeth? I can use the rest of the parts from the B starter, but i would have thought that the lucas parts would be standard. Does anyone know if this is correct? I can get hold of a pinion drive from an Imp easily via eBay, or I can get a midget one easily.

Ian,

I bought a new one for my 67 GT from Moss for $44.95 US. It was new old stock in the original old style cardboard box with lots of that preservative coating on it.

They have them currently listedion their on line catalogue.

For my spare starter I need a main drive spring part number 150-410 which is no longer available. If any one has one I would sure like to hear from you.

Thanks,

Dennis

You would have to check the part numbers. If the Lucas number including the suffix letter (A to F) for the complete starter is the same then the components *should* all be the same. Where the suffix letter changes this indicates internal differences where components may not be interchangeable with a starter with a different suffix. There is only one BL number as regardless of suffix letter all complete units are fully interchangeable, but when ordering or swapping components you must refer to the suffix letter.

Probably best to bite the bullet and exchange for a rebuilt unit.

I have decided to take a chance and buy a couple of cheap pinions off eBay. They have the same basic dimensions and teeth numbers as the one I need. One is listed for the Hillman Imp, the other for an MGA and Midget. Once I get hold of these I will have a look and post back on whether they are suitable. If not there is a chap on eBay selling brand new (not exchange)Lucas inertia starters that he assures me are a replacement for the M418G starter. At £45 these look very good value! But I'd still be happier rebuilding a unit myself!

OK, so the parts are not interchangeable, even with modification! I eventually sourced a pinion from a small old time supplier called Teesdie Classic Car Parts. It was about the same price as it would have been to get Moss US to send one over (Moss only have 1 left in stock by the way!). I also replaced the front and rear plate bushes which has made a huge difference to play at the end of the shaft. The brushes were OK, as were other parts, so it has just been a clean and paint. The main motor is reassembled, and having got the pinion delivered this morning I will finish the rebuild this weekend.

Dennis,

In the UK the part no for that spring is 27H7818 (If you look at http://www.moss-europe.co.uk you can always find the UK part no.). The part no in the UK tends to have been common accross the leyland range, so often you can find hard to source parts listed for other cars. If you do a google search you pull up a few possibilities. This includes Teesdale, which is where I got the starter pinion. This was NOS still in a leyland box and they delivered very quickly. Probably a good time to buy parts from the UK with the exchange rate as well, but I have no idea if they will ship overseas, but I can't really see why not. Have a look at https://www.inracing.co.uk/Classic_Car_Parts/Austin_Rover_Triumph_Part_Nos_10000_2K8739/ (note the https:// start).
