MG MGB Technical - Steering Column boot

Can someone with a MK1 tell me how the rubber boot on the bottom of the steering column is fitted. Does it just rest against the firewall where the steering shaft goes through?

Bruce,

I converted my 68 to a 67 dash and steering wheel/column. The rubber boot I got from Moss had a gromet type flange on the end that goes to the firewall.

I had to make an adaptor plate to fill the hole in my firewall because the hole was larger on the 68 than the 67. I then fitted the rubber boot to this plate and attached it to the firewall.

Bruce,

I just had a quick look at my 67 GT. As Cris states, the rubber boot has a grommet type flange to press into the firewall. The bellows part extends into the cockpit (not into the engine bay) on the steering shaft. I am 3'rd owner, so don't know if this boot has ever been replaced. Hope this helps

Thanks All

Kent. Just got the boot today from Moss. Now I see how it goes. Thanks for looking.

Bruce,

Seeing how it goes is the easy bit - just wait until you try to fit the thing...

Neil, you were correct. Trying to get that little split in the end of the boot corectly on the fire wall took a number of trys. But I finally got the original shaft, tube and wheel in, I even have a horn (horns)again.

BTW. It appears that the tube, steering column and wheel were from a RHD MG. I have not seen anything in the MOSS or VB catalogue that matches the tube that was in the car. it is shorter than the 67, and the end has a slightly larger diameter. The boot is a plastic accordian-shaped piece that fits into the end of the tube. THe boot is marked Lucas. It also had the turn signal cover upside down. When I tried to reverse it I found it was a RHD cover.

The steering column is two piece with nylon pins that go through one section through the other.
