MG MGB Technical - steering lock

I have a 1975 mgb. Recently while replacing the steering boots I had the steering lock up on me a couple of times. After turning the key it released. I have gone thru the archives and understand what the problem is. The key lock not the electrics. Had the cowling off and doesnt look to difficult. As the switch is working fine right now except for the steering lock mechanism I am undeceided what to do. I have three questions. 1. Does this lock have a history of working properly or does it cause problems. 2. Is it repairable. 3. Is it worth the effort as an anti-theft device. I like having things work as the are meant to but this is not a cheap fix . Thanks for any info or advice on this matter. I read where someone was installing a new switch but disabling the lock part.

These things are miserable, and new ones are usually much worse than old ones. They tend to be full of machining swarf, and casting flash which breaks off and jams up the works. Dismantle, clean thoroughly, spend an hour with jewelers files to smooth everything out, clean again, lubricate the sliding bits - you have a chance!
Should the locking bolt fall off the side of your boat, you have a better chance.
Install a fuel pump cutoff under the dash or similar. Make it a DPDT switch, install a horn relay, and wire one side of the switch so it triggers the horn off the brake lights.
Get a redneck antitheft sign: "Do you think this car is worth your life? I do."

FRM Thanks for your input. I think your advice is what I will do. I really love your idea of the redneck antitheft sign.

Took the key lock cylinder off and it was pretty dirty. Cleaned it and it works fine. Note--- The lock works only when the key is in the G position, the key is removed, and the lock bolt on the bottom slips into the slot (keyway) on the steering shaft. All this info you probably knew but it was a learning experience for me. Thanks for your help. Karl
