MG MGB Technical - steering rack adjustment

I have a 79 MGB that the steering rack was replaced 5000 miles ago (aprox)

I just went through and replaced all the bushings in the front end with neoprene bushings. I also replaced the front coil springs and had it alligned

Now the Ol'Lady is complaining that it has a little play in the steering wheel
Its not much but it does have some
I have checked all my nuts, bolts and bushing all seem fine
I pulled the boots off the steering rack tie rods and the inner bushings look fine. The outer look fine

I think the steering rack needs adjustment
I was under the impression this could only be done by adding and removing shims but I see a adjustment screw on top
Is this how you adjust the play out of the steering whee.

I need to stiffen up the steering

My '67 still has the original steering rack and has 0 freeplay. Check the outer tie rod ends for play and also the steering column U joint assembly for movement. RAY

If it's worn since you fitted it you could well find that altering the shims to take out play in the straight-ahead position makes it stiff in bends, no self-centering.

As Ray says check the UJ first, these do wear. Also columns can develop play. You need to clamp each side of the UJ with grips to see if the play is in the column, UJ or rack. This may be more difficult on an LHD than an RHD.

what is that adjustment screw looking thing on top?

The screw & locking nut bear down on a saddle that rides on the back of the rack - but if you do tighten it make sure the rack is still free for its full length.
