MG MGB Technical - Steering Rack Alignment
Hi All, I have the steering rack off the car (72 GT). What is the best way get it 'centred' before I re-install the pinion shaft? When it came off, it looked like one side was 'longer' than the other, going on the amount of compression on the gaiters. I had assumed that measuring an equal amount on both sides from the end of shaft to the inner gaiter lip would do the job. Am I correct? Regards, Liam |

Liam, The tie rods should, indeed, be equal in length. Ray |

Liam. One method is as follows. Assuming the tie rod are adjusted to equal lengths turn the steering pinion from lock to lock and count the turns, set pinion shaft 1/2 the distance between the limits. Turn the steering wheel to the desired straight ahead position and assemble the column to the rack. Clifton |
