MG MGB Technical - Steering Rack Alignment

Hi All,

I have the steering rack off the car (72 GT). What is the best way get it 'centred' before I re-install the pinion shaft?

When it came off, it looked like one side was 'longer' than the other, going on the amount of compression on the gaiters.

I had assumed that measuring an equal amount on both sides from the end of shaft to the inner gaiter lip would do the job. Am I correct?

Liam, The tie rods should, indeed, be equal in length. Ray

Liam. One method is as follows. Assuming the tie rod are adjusted to equal lengths turn the steering pinion from lock to lock and count the turns, set pinion shaft 1/2 the distance between the limits. Turn the steering wheel to the desired straight ahead position and assemble the column to the rack.
