MG MGB Technical - Steering Rack Damper Setting

Having rebuilt my front suspension and steering rack, I noticed the latter was too tight, so I fitted an additional shim. I find that the rack is now very free but can't report over sensitive steering on the road.

By suspending the front wheels, how free should the steering be? Are there any rough guidelines?

With the wheels off the ground, the steering wheel can be turned with one, maybe two fingers on my recently installed new rack. Have you set the tracking since the work? That and tyres/tyre pressures will have a big effect on the feel.

Remove the damper and replace it minus spring and shims. Gently tighten the setscrews until slight tightness is felt and back it off so that it is just free. Measure the gap between the plate and casting with feeler gauges and then select shims of exactly that thickness. Refit the shims, damper spring and tighten the screws. Check the rack movement from end to end and if there is any binding fit an extra .002" shim.
