MG MGB Technical - steering rack filling
I know this is a bit of a daft question but how do I check the oil level in the steering rack, and how do I fill. Gary |

You dont , either the boots are intact an its OK , or you change them and pour in some new. I suppose you could undo one boot , drain the rack ( jack car up the other side ) then refill via the plate on top of the steering box . |

Gary, I use a small (about 1 pint) trigger-pump type oil can to fill the rack. The nozzle can be pushed between the boot and the tie rod and the oil pumped in. I use several of the cans for topping off various fluids. They come with either a rigid or flexible spout. The rigid spout works best for the steering rack and the flexible spouts are great for shocks and master cylinder. They're fairly inexpensive so I keep one labeled for each type of fluid I need. Just replaced the boots on my new 69 GT. Not know how much oil is in the rack, I removed the plate on top of the steering box and filled it with 90EP oil until it ran out the open ends where I had removed the old boots. If drained it takes a third of a pint. Be careful not to ruin any of the shims under the plate as they determine the correct pressure on the rack. |
