MG MGB Technical - Steering Rack Rebuild
I've got my 76 B steering rack in pieces now and it's time to rebuild. First the symptoms: excessive side to side play at the steering wheel and stiff steering. The kingpins don't have many miles on them and have been lubed pretty regularly. When I disassembled the rack, the bearing (on the end of the shaft) was destroyed so I know it must be replaced. There is also wear on the rack bushing (I can wiggle the rack in its bushing). So I know I need those parts as well as tie rod ends. The rack gaiters are in good shape. What other normal-wear items should I replace while I'm in there? I'm good at rebuilding stuff but new to steering racks. Thanks Tyson |

Tyson. If your pinion and rack are good the only other wear item is the pinion bushing. I don't think it's available through Moss or VB. It may be available through local sources. I can't find my measurements but it's a common size, mine was ok so I didn't need to locate a source. The shop manual or the Bentley book gives instructions for setting rack damper using the shims on the top cover. Correct setting should eliminate any rack free play. If you haven't checked the condition of the shaft u-joint now is a good time to replace it if it's loose. Good luck, Clifton |
