MG MGB Technical - steering wheel

hello

i live in winnipeg, manitoab canada. Our steering wheel is cracked and won't pass a safety. We are on a limited budget to replace it. Does anyone know of anywhere in canada that would have a decent steering wheel? (used) I don't have the.. what do you call it the... hmm.. hub size? but it is a 64b. If not in canada somewhere else that not gonna cost a fortune. We can't afford to fix much more this year so. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

If you wraped some duct tape really tight on the crack, with some sort of re-inforcing rods, then covered the wheel with a steering wheel cover --- like the leather one, would the guy notice?

Of course, this is not a suggestion, merely a question. As such, there is no warranty, or assumption of any liability what-so-ever by present living souls or their progeny.

This is born out in answering a question with a hypothetical question. I offer no answers to your situation.

well.. what we tried was a very good spray on adhesive and it worked for a while then it cracked and this was pretty well it. the crack isn't noticeable but were gonna try to get it through the safety the way it is. They already failed it once for this so hopefully they won't notice. We also tried what you suggested.... the duct tape and steering wheel cover but the guy was smarter than that. haha.. what i'm looking for is a new one. well.. i mean preferably used. thanks anyways.

Is the USA the only country that doesn't require safety inspections? I hear about these things a lot on this BBS.

Steve,
I believe it's pretty much up to the individual States. As a kid back in Virginia, our family car had an annual inspection, and that was back in the late fifties. I think it may be more common back east..we also had to buy a seperate license plate for the city, of all things. Joe

Rob,

Have you tried Mike Perchanook at Obsolete Automotive in Point Edward?

Rob,

Overnight twas thinking about this, and on this morn looked at an old 64 wheel that was replaced. Where the spokes meet the wheel have broken away from the plastic enclosed steel wheel, and is worth nothing but a wall hanging.

Is what you have a stock OEM wheel? The shaft-hole is aprox 24/32s of an inch.

As a fellow '64er, that's the best I can offer, besides the levity of the previous post.

good luck

The Paint Over Rust people, POR-15, have a steering wheel repair kit. If all the metal bits are still connected, and you just need to repair the plastic, you may want to check it out:
