MG MGB Technical - Steering wheel alignment

My car is up on stands and I wish to install the steering wheel. Does anyone have a way of ensuring the steering wheel/road wheel alignment is correct without actually getting the car on the ground etc?
Richard Coombs

First, make sure you have equal amount of track rod ends visible on both road wheels.

Then
1. put the steering wheel on the splines
2. turn the wheel to either full lock right or left.
3. turn the wheel to the opposite lock BUT carefully count how many revolutions of the wheel it takes
4. Divide the number of turns by two and bring the steering wheel back this number of turns.
5. remove steering wheel and centralise it in this position.

Now, you will maybe find that the road wheels might not point straight ahead. This is because someone in the past might have been lazy in aligning the tracking. So you might have to re-align the road wheels...
