MG MGB Technical - Steering Wheel Change & Driving

A friend is giving me a 14" steering wheel to replace the 16" wheel on my 72B. All I need to do is buy a hub for it.

In comparing steering wheels last night, I noticed a rubber bumper B has about a 15" diameter wheel, and my chrome bumper B has about a 16" diameter wheel.

The steering wheel looks like a shorter replica of the standard wheel on my B, with the holes in the spokes to the wheel, just on less hole. I can find no brand name on the replacement wheel.

Provided I can find a hub for this wheel, what affect will a 2" smaller diameter steering wheel have on driving. I realize I will have less leverage, but just how does that relate to driving?

I am considering this change because at 6'4" in height, my right leg essentially is crammed between the steering wheel at 4-5 O'clock and the center counsel. A smaller wheel may enable me to actually relax my leg.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

R.W, it does make the steering a little heavier but I like the extra positive feel as you turn the circumference slightly less for any given corner. However, the major draw back is that The wheel rim will obscure the dials of the water, oil and petrol gauges. If you can live with moving you head sideways to check dials, go for it.

To compensate for the heavier steering fit roller bearings in place of the thrust washers next time you do the kingpins and/or fit the frontline castor kit

14" is a perfect size in many ways - and if you don't like the heaviness, then there are ways around it. I drove a B roadster in an autotest the other week, after only ever doing it in a midget before - and, it was almost as light ......

At your height, it will make it alot easier as well. If, however, you decide not to take up the offer - I've got to get two - the GT has the old huge one, and the roadster has a stupid 13" one which really really really is hard work :(
