MG MGB Technical - STEERING WHEEL COLUMN ASSEMBLY

J FLESHMAN, Illinois, USA, JF1046@SBCGLOBAL.NET

I removed my steering wheel assembly to gain better access to windscreen fastners. When I unbolted the assembly from the base of the dash I pulled the wheel out and off of the shaft that connects to the coupler on the engine side of the firewall. Now trying to remount the assembly I have slid the assembly over the oblong shaped shaft that remained and am having some difficulty getting the assembly to fully seat. Any suggestions to accomplish the task of reassembling the steering column properly would be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful weekend all.

I am not sure what you have done. Could you provide a better description?

When removing the steering column, you remove the bolt from the U joint, in the engine compartment, which connects the steering column with the shaft going to the steering box. Then, you remove the three bolts securing the lower portion of the steering column to the fire wall. All electrical connections are detached, then, the four upper bolts are removed, the steering column removed from the passenger compartment.

"to remount the assembly I have slid the assembly over the oblong shaped shaft that remained and am having some difficulty getting the assembly to fully seat" This is the portion of you message which is giving me the most confusion. Too many assemblies for me to fully understand what his happening and what you are seeing. I can read this as either you are trying to install the complete upper steering column or that the upper steering column came apart when you tried to remove it from the vehicle.

The use of the workshop manual's terms for the various parts (or from some form of common reference) and a photo of what needs to be done would help. But, at the very least some more description so we are understanding the same things.

What year car is it too. The steering columns are not all the same over the years.

The description initially implies that you removed the wheel from the steering column which is fair enough (although not required). But on reassembly it seems like the outer fixed columnn may have been pulled off the steering column itself leaving the rotating column attached to the rack by the UJ. OTOH maybe the steering colum was removed complete, with or without the wheel attached, and you are now having problems engaging it with the UJ.

As Les says, we need a better description or ideally a photo of where the problem is.
