MG MGB Technical - Steering Wheel Frustration

Hi all

Can someone set me straight on just how many different steering wheel shafts there are for the B?

My 67 has a small spline shaft in it that has a mid seventies steering wheel on it.

The car also came with what I assume was the original steering shaft. It has a larger spline. I just purchased a steering wheel that was supposed to have come from a 67 but find it will not fit either of my shafts.

From other threads, I assume this is the notorious 68/69 steering wheel. By my measurements the splines on my current shaft are 0.68 inches and the wheel has a hole that is 0.61 inches.

Can I put the steering shaft from a 68 in the 67? Or is it that I just need a bigger hammer?

If not, anyone want to trade for a pre 68/69 steering wheel

Bruce, can you count the splines in the wheel hole and the internal diam.?
and splines on the shaft, and its diam.

Bruce, if indeed you have a '69 wheel, would you be so inclined to sell it, perhaps?

I currently have a Moto-Lita on my '69 but I'd love to have an original spoked wheel.

e-mail me off-line if you're interested.

Rruce, Based on your measurements, you may have a 70-74 steering shaft. You said you have a mid 70's wheel, is the wheel similar to wheels 7 and 9 on page 45 of the Moss catalog? Does the wheel have a separate hub?Is it inside the standard early non collapsible housing? I believe UK cars a non collapsible column for several yeears after we switched and their shafts may switch to your column?

68-69 USA cars have a smaller inside diameter hub, hub is built into the wheel, and a smaller shaft compared to the later chrome bumper cars.I don't have the measurements but remember from a previous car the 68-69 wheel will not fit a later car, the hub is too small.

I don't think a 68 shaft for USA cars will fit you column housing. 62-67 steering shafts used bushings on each end and the collapsible columns used ball bearings on the shaft. 68-69 and 70 wheels don't have a horn push.

I realize I haven't answered your question, I don't know the size of the 62-67 shaft. I believe the lower spline is the same on all chrome bumper cars, the U joint is commom to all. Hopefully this informatin will help you determine what you have.
