MG MGB Technical - Steering wheel removal

Is there a special tool for removing the steering wheel on a 77B. Tried a wheel puller but nothing to grab.

Dan,
Leave the nut screwed on flush with the threads, leaving room for the wheel to come off its spline, but so that it won't come off and knock you in the face. Now, while applying pulling pressure with your knees, smack the nut/spindle with a lead hammer.
This will "pop" the wheel off its spindle.
Some PB Blaster lubricant wouldn't hurt either.

Pete, Tried that. Used the PB Blaster. Won't budge.
Can't believe how tight the fit is.

I imagine you will have to tap it from behind using a piece of wood as a drift . A heavy hammer used gently is the way to go prolly can do it any other way with the room available . , clearly you would tap one side then 'tother .
Never had to do this with my Moto Lita , it's always just pulled off .

Done this more times then I could count. looseten nut even with end of shaft. Lay a lead WW hammer on the end of the shaft. Stick your knees behind the wheel and apply pressure. Hit the lead hammer with a BFH really hard repeadetly as needed. If it doesn't come hit more and harder. Never failed me or damaged anything. Bob Thompson/International auto

Had the same problem a few weeks back and had to use a two legged hub puller, worked a treat and much more controlled than the hammer and less chance of damaging the dash. leave the nut on the thread as staed by others.

Use the BFH method and hope you don't destroy what"s left of your steering column bearings in the process

In addition to what others have suggested, I remember (I think) reading a caveat about being too exhuberant with the hammer when removing from a later style column with the "crushable" safety feature.

I agree with J.A....I just pulled mine the other day and at first attempt I pulled pretty hard and nothing..I gave it a shot of Blaster and let it sink in...and then with the nut still on the col. I gave it a firm constant pull with a little rocking and it came off with a great deal less effort then I thought it would take...I also have heard that the B's with the crushable steering col. don't like having the col. pounded on.....Tom
