MG MGB Technical - Strange Vibration

I just purchased a very clean 79 roadster. There is a vibration felt in the steering wheel when letting off the gas at most speeds. Then goes away under load when I give it gas. I'm thinking it may be U-Joints but havn't time to look under car yet. Any ideas?? Car has 55K at this time. Thanks, Morgan

Think you are on the right track. U joint is a common source of backoff vibrations.

Are you talking about prop-shaft UJs? Would have thought there is quite a lot of distance and damping between the prop-shaft and the steering wheel, any vibration in the prop-shaft being felt more in the gear lever. I would be looking at engine mounts and something (exhaust?) being pushed against the rack shaft when the engine is tilted off-centre on the over-run (opposite side to the tilting that occurs on acceleration).

I thought the same as Paul until I had a very bad vibration in my wife's minivan. It felt like the steering wheel was fighting me. I took it to the mechanic, he jacked up the car and wiggled the drive shaft and said it was the drive shaft U-joints.

I laughed and asked how it would impact the steering. He said it usually vibrated the engine so hard that it shakes the front end and thus the steering wheel.

I came back to his shop 2 hours later and he had installed new U-joints. Everything was back to normal.
