MG MGB Technical - Stromberg and Exhaust Problems
I Have a 76 MGB Canadian car with no catalytic converter and a single Zenith Stromberg CD carburetor. (The emissions equipment except for the adsorption canister was removed by the previous owner). I previosuly had trouble with the idle speed being unstable. After setting the static timing, replacing points and condenser and setting points gap, and setting valve gaps, then proceeded to try and adjust the settings on the carburetor for idle. While doing this, the muffler/exhaust system got so hot that it heated the floor and melted part of the carpet, before we used an extinguisher on the center muffler. Since then, we have used a rebuild kit to rebuild the carburetor, cleaning it out at the same time. After that, the car is extremely difficult to get started (won't start without using the gas pedal). Once started it will not maintain an idle speed or accelerate. The fuel pump is working and the engine is getting spark. During the process of trying to get it running again, smoke started coming out through the engine bay, but cleared before its source could be located (perhaps in the exhaust system?). Please help! Thanks. |
