MG MGB Technical - SU float setting

Fitted to my GT is a pair of HS4 with the spring loaded needles. When I came to service the carbs recently came to set the float distance and found that the floats are the ones with the integral pivot point and therefore no plate to bend to set the fuel height. The question is how do you set the fuel height with these types of float? Did look in the Haynes manual no mention of these types of float.

Washers under the float valve if required. But I honestly don't believe it is that critical, and I suspect is why the all-plastic floats came about. On a couple of occasions I have had to drive my V8 controlling the fuel pump manually due to float and valve problems and found no significant differences between full to overflowing and just before the float bowl emptied. As long as you set up the carburettors properly with what ever floats you have I wouldn't expect you to have problems.

In theory flaot height will change the mixture but that may be partly compensated for when the carbs are set up with the jet nuts.
The "closed" clearance (as shown using a rod in the Haynes book) is 125-187 thou (use a 1/8" - 3/16" drill bit) for the various metal hinge set ups and 62 - 187 thou (1/16" - 3/16") for the all plastic floats.
With spring loaded valves the closed point is with the valve resting on its seat but the spring not compressed.
