MG MGB Technical - SU Fuel pump
Hi all,I'm thinking about replacing the after market fuel pump on my 72B with a genuine SU solid state fuel pump. I would like comments from members.cheers, Barry 72B |

Barry- I've been using the SU solid state fuel pump for years and even put them on two son's roadsters. No problems at all. If you want, you can order it direct from the manufacturer. Click on this: http://www.burlen.co.uk/ |

But then ... I had a solid state on my V8 and it started playing up. Unlike the points type when the solid-state type starts playing up you are stuffed. I've gone back to points. |

I've been installing 1985 Honda Accord fuel pumps for years. Reliable as can be. I mount them in the trunk. They just don't let you down. Bob/international auto |

Thank you all for your input, a local MG shop has suggested instaling a back up pump under the bonnet. Bob, the Honda pumps are they solid state ? Cheers, Barry |

Barry- A back up pump?!? Boy, are they ever desparate to make money off of you! You're being tested to see how gullible you are. If you go for that one, the ripoffs will never end for you at that shop. They're obviously crooks. Get a Bentley manual and do it yourself. Click on this: http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ |

A backup pump is always in order, but with a new pump in place (regular, all electronic or Honda) you will go many years before needing one. If you install one, I would suggest going to NAPA and get one of the little square, run all the time, make a lot of noise Fawcet pumps and mount it under the car, close to the original pump. Plumb the two pumps in series (both have only check valves in them and will pump through each other) and then wire both pumps through a single throw, double throw switch. Tha way, if the pump ever does fail on you, all you have to do is flip the switch and be on your way (if the switch is accessable while in the driver' seat, you don't even have to pull to the side of the road, just flip the switch. Finally, if you use a single pole, doule through, center off switch, you have a cheap and easy anti theft device built in. Steve is correct, don't let the shop install a back up pump as it will cost way too much. The little Fawcet pumps from NAPA only cost about $40.00. Good luck - Dave |
