Interesting that you should ask. I just inquired of David DuBois about this and here is his reply: "Allen, > Is the film easily cleaned off the points? It is easy, but a bit fussy. The pump has to be removed and the end cover taken off. The upper contacts (on the flat spring) can be removed and cleaned with solvent and 400 grit sand paper. the lower contacts are difficult to access as they are below the top surface of the pedestal and above the lower surface. The best way to clean them is to remove the pedestal mounting screws and carefully fold the pedestal back so the lower contacts are exposed. They can then be cleaned as above. As stated in the shop manuals, reassembly is the reverse of disassembly." FWIW, Allen |

C. W Do yourself a favour and buy a new 'pointless'(or electronic) pump (about £40) I spent hours trying to sort out an old pump without much luck. Rgds Dave G |

CW - Allen passed along my suggestion for cleaning the points in a SU fuel pump. In your case there the pump is mounted through the front bulkhead of the boot, it is possible to accomplish this procedure in situ (probably not the most comfortable position to work in, but it is probably a toss up ove removng the pump). Thanks for all help and info. |

I replaced my points last Spring, and it was my first try at working on the pump. Removing it didn't seem that difficult to me. Replacing and adjusting the points was made a lot easier on the bench, and I was able to perform extensive testing before reassembly. |

On a rubber bumper car cleaning the points by leaning in the boot/hatch has *got* to be easier than removing the pump to clean them, no toss-up at all in my opinion. On a chrome bumper car it is a different matter as the points end is inside the right-hand battery cradle in front of the battery. The problem with removing the chrome bumper pump is that it is below the top of the tank, so fuel will run out when the pipes are undone. *Unless* you have a UK or non-emissions car and go for a drive before tackling it, as with the proper ventilated fuel filler cap with spring-loaded valve it develops a slight vacuum in the tank that is enough to stop fuel running out. Another beauty of the rubber bumper pump is that it is mounted higher than the top of the tank, so as long as you keep the ends of the pipes up there no fuel runs out anyway. |
