MG MGB Technical - SU Fuel Pump
Hi Folks: Planning rebuild of a few SU fuel pumps for my 67B roadster. 2 units exhibit strong arcing at the points. Most likely the swamp resistors are open. Has anyone opened the armature bottle and replaced the resistors? and if so; any special tools needed? or can the function of the swamp resistor be accomplished externally? Thanks: Rich Boris |

Rich - The coil can be pressed out of the housing using a long socket to press on the end of the armature at the top of the coil housing. I use a hydraulic upright press, but it can be accomplished with a large vice (its just a bit more difficult). The problem is pressing the coil back in such that the armature is not pushed through the coil as the bottom plate comes in contact with the inside of the housing. I had a special tool made up to accomplish that. If you go this route, you can replace the existing swamping resistor with a 91 ohm 2 watt carbon resistor. An easier way would be to install a Transient Voltage Suppressor in place of the capacitor that is installed on the top end o the pump. The TVS can be installed either across the soil leads or across the points, it will work either way. The problem with this approach is that you can't just go into Radio Shack and purchase the proper TVS (They can't even spell TVS). If you will send me your postal address by e-mail, I'll mail you on of the TVSs that I us. Cheers - Dave |
