MG MGB Technical - SU H4 carb coversion/ Air filters?
I'm converting to SU carbs on 75 B. Has anyone identified which Air cleaners can be used? The brake power booster leaves vey little space. Thanks. K L |

Not too many, as far as I know. I think those expensive cone shaped from K&N will work. Basically, your looking for the thinest ones you can find. My supplier in Montreal sell what I think are European specmidget 1500 filters to his customers have done the same conversion. Give him a call. Chris Hollum. (514)639-4839. Not too early. He's grumpy in the morning. Good luck. TTFN |

K- The K&N conical filters will fit, but their surface area is so small that they won't meet the flow requirements should you wish to enhance the engine's performance. However, there is no reason to give up on the option of mounting larger capacity airfilters. Converting a 1975 or later car to the earlier non servo boosted dual circuit master cylinder is possible, although difficult due to the mounting flange having been turned 90 degrees. The fitting of a modified earlier pedal box (the pattern of the pedal box mounting holes on the sheet metal flange is different), complete with Master Cylinder that matches this mounting flange pattern will solve this problem, but be advised that you will also need the earlier version pedals that were designed to be used with it or the clutch pedal will not depress far enough to disengage the clutch! In addition to the aforementioned items, you will need the clutch slave cylinder line from an earlier car, plus the engine compartment brake lines that run from the brake master cylinder to the front wheels and the brake lines that run to the connector under the passenger seat from earlier car. |

I have a custom air box setup that you can find referenced in the archives. It uses a large K&N filter at the front (allowing cooler air to enter from the front of the engine compartment) and feeds both HIF4s. The rear of the box is tapered to clear the MC / servo (mine's a '76 RBB). Unfortunately, the gifted gentleman who fabricated this "one of a kind" unit is not planning on building more. Although, if you know someone who is good with metal / aluminum fabrication, and understands the clearance problem (as well as airflow requirements), it's probably doable. Otherwise, if you can live without the servo-assisted brakes, Steve S.'s suggestion is likely the best. Barry |

Does anyone know the K&N part number for the conical filters? I am trying a source other than Moss ect and need K&N's #. Scott |
