MG MGB Technical - Suspension Rebuild
I have recently rebuilt both front and rear suspensions on my australian built 1969 mgb roadster, the front with standard replacements ie lower wishbone arms, springs and all bushes including the 4 cross member pads, using the GT v8 bushes on the inner wishbones. I reused the front dampers as they appeared to be working ok with no leaks. The rear I have fitted new interleaved springs and replaced the dampers with shock absorbers. The car heights wheel centre to chrome strip now ars Fr 13.25" Fl 14" Rr 14.5" Rl 14.25" The real problem is now with the camber of the front wheels Left is minus 1 3/4 deg and Right Plus 2 deg with castor angles of Left plus 5 deg and right plus 5 2/3 deg, with a toe of plus 1.4 mm. I have been through the suspension set up again and all appears to be assembled correctly. Has any one any suggestions how I could correct the camber settings and what other points I could check. |

J.E. is it possible that the upper trunion is reversed on the Right side? It's easy to do, but I don't know how much angular difference it would make. |

Camber should be fairly neutral at 1.25 degrees positive to 0.25 negative. Castor should be 5 degrees to 7.25 degrees. Kingpin inclination should be 7.25 degrees to 9 degrees. Toe-in should be 1.5mm to 2.3mm. Both cambers seem quite a bit out (one too negative one too positive), the others OK, except perhaps a smidgen more toe-in needed. Are the wheel bearings OK i.e. no excessive end-float? Damper bodies properly bedded onto the cross-member? Did you use new lower A-arm bolts or check for ovality/wear? Did you check for snugness of fit between bolts and A-arms? Were the angles measured at the wheel rims i.e. are the wheels true? Have you driven the car yet? The upper rubber bushes in particular may need bedding-in. |
