MG MGB Technical - Temperature gauge calibration
The combined oil pressure and temperature gauge on my 1974 MGB GT starts at the middle of the scale when its cold and when its up to temperature sits at the top end of the scale. The oil pressure works fine. Is there a way to adjust the range of the gauge. |

John - Remove the lens from the gauge and pull the temp gauge needle off and reset it to the bottom peg when the engine is cold. Next, remove the sensor from the head (you will need to drain a bit of the coolant out before doing this), and stick it in a pan of water on a camp stove nest to the car. Put a candy thermometer in the water with the sensor (keep both off of the bottom of the pan) if you want to monitor the temp although it is not necessary. Light a fire under the pan and pring the water to a boil - check that the gauge is reading 212° F or 100° C. If the gauge is off a small amount at boiling, you can reset it to read correctly. If it is off by a large amount (1/4 scale), then the gauge will need to be repaired or replaced. Good luck - Dave |

Thanks for such a straight forword course of action. I guess that the car has overheated at some time and the gauge has gone off the scale. This would work out nicely with your theory of puting the needle back where it should be. |
