MG MGB Technical - Temperature Gauge Low
Firstly, the car is a 1975 Jubilee BGT with mechanical temperature gauge. The problem is as follows. The temperature gauge never gets above normal, and rarely reaches halfway between C and N positions. As an example today the gauge barely moved off the cold band, with an ambient of 15 deg C. Generally it varies day to day even if ambient is consistent. Plenty of heat inside the car from new matrix. Replaced thermostat recently thinking the old one could be the problem, but the problem still persist. About to fit a new water pump; the existing one has play on the pulley shaft. Is the temperature gauge more likely to be the culprit? Your help would appreciated, not found similar problem in the archive. Thanks Steve |

The ususal mode of gauge failure is for them to read low before failing altogether. If you can check the temperature of the coolant with some other device e.g. a cooking thermometer (don't tell the head cook if it isn't you) you should be able to confirm it. |

Thanks all Obtained a cooking thermometer from my local supermarket. Coolant temperature measured via radiator cap is around 80 deg C. The temperature gauge in the dash has barely moved off cold. It would appear the gauge is due for retirement. Steve |
