MG MGB Technical - Testing heater fan out of car
Listers, Can I test my heater fan out of the car. Please k.i.s.s.(keep it simple sir)when you give directions. I'm old and fragile in the comprehension area (-; Jim 70B 69C |

Touch one wire from the fan to any ground, and the other fan wire to a green wire connection on the fusebox (ignition on.) |

Jim, I tested mine on the bench using my 12V battery charger. It would change direction depending on which lead you put to the ground side. Cheers, Doug |

Doug, That's a perfect suggestion! Thanks Jim |

Make sure you connect it the right way round when back in the car. It blows in both directions, but much more effectively connected one way than the other. And a point about very early cars, they had a wired stator instead of a magnet so rotate in the same direction whichever way the power is connected, like the starter motor. |

JIM be careful when you test the motor on the bench the torque on start up can toss it off the bench breaking that fine plastic fan RIC |

Followup, Thw fan works. The booster idea was so simple and worked well. Paul The wire harness is coded and the ends of the wires have different sizes to them going into the fan. The only place I can screw this up is on the other end of the wires where the bullits connect. Thanks for the tip. Jim |

Jim - interesting, my 73 and 75 use standard bullets on the short tail coming out of the fan and can be reversed. In fact the V8 *was* reversed when I bought it, and if I hadn't got the roadster to compare it with and noticed the significant difference in output I would probably still be one of the many who complain about the ineffective MGB heater. |
