MG MGB Technical - The B and the Z-series Magnette

Wasn't sure whether to put this on the Z-series Magnette bit of the BBS, but assumed this part would have more traffic.

I just need to satisfy a long-standing curiosity and it relates to the front suspensions of the Y, A and B and that of the Gerald Palmer-designed Magnette. The latter featured telescopic dampers and a 'passive' (if you like) upper suspension arm, not the lever arm damper/upper suspension arm arrangement of the Y/A/B.

Was the Magnette IFS therefore a development of the Y-series suspension as the quoted article seems to suggest,or did the Nuffield Organization (because the cars would have been in development before the BMC merger) really sanction the development of a completely different coil and wishbone IFS for the ZA and its Wolseley 14/40 sister car?

Stephen - This is the answer I posted on the Magnette site.
That looks like the grommet used in the grill shell of the T series cars, where the bracket for the headlight bar attaches. Doubt that it is used in the long list of other cars he lists it for (I know for a fact that it isn't used in the MGB or the Magnette).

You might try posting on the T series TD-TF bulletin board for more exposure.

The Z-series Magnette suspension is completely different than the Y-series derived TD, TF, MGA and MGB front suspension.

Also false is "with other BMC saloons taking advantage along the way."

I may have been a little quick in saying:

Attached is a picture of the Farina Magnette suspension. It also has the damper acting as upper lever, so it's a similar design but the lower arms and spring pan look very different from the Y/TDF/MGAB design.

Using the shock absorber as the upper link was quite common amongst BMC cars eg Morris Minor, Riley 1.5, Wolseley 1500, Marina etc that used torsion bars as the springing, but were a different design to the MGA/MGB and Farina range.

Gerald Palmer may well have used the design referred across his other Italianate series eg Wolseley 4/44 and 6/90; Riley Pathfinder etc

The suspension with unequal length arms, lever arm dampers and springs sitting in a spring pan beneath the arm was patented by General Motors in the United Kingdom in 1935. Here is the drawing from GB429880.

MG, GM, what's the difference. Fisher, who made GM bodies, owned Pressed Steel, the company that made the bodies for the MGB. RAY

Not so.

Pressed Steel in the UK was an independent company from 1930 until taken over by BMC in 1965. BMC merged it with Fisher and Ludlow to form Pressed Steel Fisher.

The Pressed Steel Plant at Swindon is now BMW plant producing pressing for the MINI , Pressed Steel Cowley is where the MINI is assembled and Fisher and Ludlow is now the Jaguar plant in Birmingham where all the Jaguars are assembled.

NO GM involvement what so ever.
