MG MGB Technical - Thermal Transmitter Fitting

Hello All,

Can any owners of dual oil/water gauge cars - CB mainly, tell me how the probe end of the water temp capillary secures onto the cylinder head?

The sensor has gland nut - is the part of the head it screws on to cast as part of the head, or is it an adapter type which can be removed?

I'm having issues getting it to fit a V8 which is designed for the later male type screw in electronic sensor.

Thanks, Liam Healy

Liam, can't remember on the B, but the 1275 midget uses an adaptor for the temp probe that fits many other applications. Item 48 in the Moss cylinder head figure. http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29272
I used this to adapt the probe to my V6 in my Midget and the I6 in my MGA.

I'm pretty sure on a 4-cylinder it screws straight into the head. The factory V8 is the same bulb fitting (although different gauge markings) and screws in to an adapter screwed into the front of the inlet manifold. Depending on the source and era of your V8 it could vary.

The gland nut screws directly into the casting in the head (4 cylinder), just below the thermostat valve and hose. It is the same size as the electric sensor gland nut. I changed over from an electric sensor temperature gauge to the duel temp/oil gauge when I changed my dash to the 67 metal dash. No adaptors were necessary

The threads in the 4 cylinder head and on the gland nut (and on the electrical sensors) is 3/8 - 18 NP (straight thread). Good luck - Dave

Thanks for the advice - I'm in the position of trying to join two female fittings together with enough room for the sensor bulb to go down the middle of them in to the manifold!

Off to the B+Q superstore, plumbing section.

David, the thread info is very useful. I never know how to identify it.
