MG MGB Technical - Three questions

In the interest of saving space, I'm going to use this thread to ask three questions regarding my 1971 mgb roadster:

1) Where precisely on the rear wheel well do you secure the inertia reel of a Securon 514/30 seat belt? The instructions I have, along with Lindsay Porter's book, are not very informative, picture or diagram-wise. I cannot find anywhere on the well where a bolt would go to attach the reel. Should there be one? If anyone knows of a website that has good drawings or pictures, and good installation directions, I would appreciate that information.

2) Can you buy a new hardware kit for installing a Securon seat belt set? As you might guess, this set is not brand new, but it has very little use, and no accidents. I can't find anywhere that offers such a set. Does MGOC still sell the kit for welding to the wheel well?

3) Finally, I had all the lights working on my car, and started rewrapping the wires in blue tape. In doing so, I must have messed something up, because I now have a right front turn signal that works fine when I turn on the emergency flashers, but only flashes once or twice when I turn on the signal, then stays in the bright "on" position. The parking light works fine, as does the rear turn signal light. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why it will blink once or twice, then stop? I have unwrapped and checked the connections, the grounds, and everything else I could think of doing. I'm stumped, but I evidently did something while wrapping the wires.

If anyone has any thoughts or sources of information on these subjects, I will really appreciate. I'm getting close to being ready to have the car inspected, and I'm getting anxious. Thanks.

I doubt if you did any damage while wrapping wires. I'd try new bulbs and clean their sockets.

Your OE belts were attached to the tonneau panel and probably don't have wheel well fittings. Jeff Zorn sells the Securon type brackets and captive nuts for wheel well mounting.

Welding is required to install the brackets and nuts. Some people have used backing plates unter the wheel wells to secure their belts. That may be as safe as using the correct brackets and captive nuts.

I did some Google searching and several places sell seat belt mounting hardware but they don't show any drawings of what is included. You can also try the parts Help racks found in many discount auto parts stores. Auto salvage yards may have some hardware you can use, but avoid cars rusted out or those that have been in a collision when looking for parts. I couldn't find any on line photos, I can take some photos of my belt mounting and send to you tonight if that will help.

The bullet connectors under the grill and in the trunk/boot tend to get brittle and sometimes break and split. Any faulty bullet connectors should be replaced. Also go to the recent threat on Get grounded and read Fletcher's (FRM) post about grounding.

Let me know if you need photos.

Clifton,

I would appreciate any pictures you could send. I'll try Jeff Zorn for the hardware.

I've replace almost all the connectors and bulbs with new ones. I will check the bulbs again. Thanks.

Curt, I sent you three photos. Here is some Securon information I found, don't remember if the same information is in their instructions.
