MG MGB Technical - Timing
I have an old timing light that connects to the positive and negative poles on the battery, then has a connector that surrounds the spark plug wire. Which wire should I surround to check the timing? Regards, Randy Olson 1977 mgb roadster |

Connect it to the number one plug wire (closest to the front of the engine.) |

Randy, you can connect the negative cable to a grounding point such as the alternator bracket, and the positive cable to a terminal in your fuse box (instead of the battery.) |

Jeff, That's a good idea since the cables probably aren't long enough to reach the battery. Which terminal in the fuse box to you connect to? Randy |

I did that and the clamp shifted and grounded against the hood prop bracket on the inside of the car frying some wiring down to the starter. Now (and previously) I put all of it under the car from the front, pull the two clamps back to the starter and put hot wire clamp on to black wire there and ground the other one on the frame then pull the one that goes on the sparkplug wire up the front of the engine being careful to avoid the fan. All under the car and nothing to fall but be careful about the routing up to the spark plug so you don't entangle a belt or the fan. |
