MG MGB Technical - Timing problem?
Help guys! The distributor shaft was removed from a1974 mgb roadster chrome bumper,I am trying to re-install it.The #1 cyl is @TDC.The rotor is pointing towards the 2o'clock position ,the crankshaft gear and camshaft are on the dot,the wires are in the proper firing order, still she backfires through the carbs and won't start. What am i doing wrong? Much Thanks!! Frank |

a. is the firing order with a counterclockwise rotation of the rotor? b. are the points (if fitted) gapped properly and have you static timed the car? |

Frank, The distributor goes in at 2:00 when: No. One is at TDC and the valves are "rocking." If you have the timing cover off, this situation occurs when the mark on the cam sprocket is at about 2:00, not directly opposite the mark on the crankshaft sprocket. Doug |

be sure yopu have static timed on the right side of the cam, The rotor goes counter clockwise, time just as the points open on that side of the cam. |

You could be 180 degrees off. TDC also occurs on exhust stroke! Remove rocker cover and observe rockers. Both level on #1 at TDC is firing #1. Mike! |

Frank. There is an article on my website covering ignition timing. It covers what has been said above and goes into a little more depth. If you are interested, go to www.custompistols.com/ and click on the MG and articles sections. Les |
