MG MGB Technical - Tmp Gage?
Is there a temp gage that shows the actual temp? I would like to know the temp of the engine and not just relie on the C---H gage. I had a oil temp gage in a previous car and I found it really useful. Thanks in advance. |

Since under normal conditions it should always indicate much the same temp i.e. 'N' on a C-N-H gauge there doesn't seem much point ... but early cars had such a gauge, it was a dual temp and oil pressure gauge, both mechanical, which might not be applicable to your car, not knowing the year. |

You can get an idea of what the actual temperature is by opening the radiator cap and putting a thermometer in the coolant. Let the engine warm up until the gauge reads at or near "N". Make a note of the temperature on the thermometer. You could get an aftermarket gauge that is marked in degrees, but then you could not be sure that the temperature sending unit in the cylinder head is calibrated the way the new gauge is. The sender is a variable resistor; as the engine temperature goes up, the sender's resistance goes down. For a gauge to read accurately, the sender must offer the same resistance at a given temp that the gauge is calibrated for. If you could find an aftermarket gauge and a matching sender that would screw into the head, it should work. FWIW, I just replaced the sender in my car with a Moss unit purchased from LBCar Co. The room temperature resistance of the sender is about 680 ohms. I haven't measured it at any other temperatures. |
