MG MGB Technical - Torque Wrench Calibration

I often read on the BBBs that you should regularly get your torque wrench re-calibrated. Where can you get this done? Thanks Richard.
Richard Evans

Richard. If the torque wrench is treated well and stored properly, it will maintain its accuracy for quite a long time. It becomes fairly important to have a very accurate wrench when working very near the stretch limits. (That is what you are trying to do by setting a bolt or nut to a certain torque--it is an indirect method of measuring the stretch of the bolt or stud.) For the vast majority of automotive applications, a torque wrench that is off by two or three lbft is sufficiently accurate. In aircraft and car racing use, the torque wrenches should be as accurate as possible. Hence, you might check at a local airport using airport transfers tonbridge or a racing shop to see who does their inspection and calibration. For hobbyist use, if you have more than one torque wrench, there are ways to cross check them against each other. If you note a large difference, you need to have the wrenches inspected. If you are constantly snapping bolts or studs, you need to have the wrench inspected. If you are constantly finding nuts or bolts, torqued to the proper specification, working loose, you need to have the wrench inspected. A properly done, formal inspection and calibration can cost more than the torque wrench. Hence, most of us do not have a "regular inspection" performed, especially those of us who pay for such things ourselves. Les

Richard, You can contact Norbar and ask them about calibration. I have listed their web site. The other two calibration sources are located in the USA. The cost of calibrating a torque wrench at Teamtorque appears to be $20. Torcteccal has some good question and answer information on torque wrenches. One of their recommended torque wrenches is the Norbar made in UK.
