MG MGB Technical - Turn Signal Woes

Would someone please explain to me in simple layman's terms how to check if there is power going into the flasher? Can I easily check if the flasher is still good? Also, how do I check if the turn signal switch is working properly? I took it off the steering column, cleaned it with contact cleaner, and replaced it. Before doing that, I had the right side signals front and back working. Now neither side front or back works. The hazards work all the way around. Wiring drives me nuts! Thanks for any help.

Hi, CG - sure would be nice to know what year car we're talking about, here - there were several variations of the circuits - semi-sorry for the semi-rant <grin>

Seriously, there's a really good site run by Rick Astley that is of immeasurable help with MG wiring issues. The part that covers turn signals is at:

http://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/signals.html

You can get a pretty good background on this sometimes maddening subject by reading the items in the "Basics" section on the left side of the screen, too. Hope this helps - - Alec

With a hazard flasher car you should find a small rectangular 2 pin flasher unit.

Power to the flasher units is all the same; the plain Green wire to the B terminal should show a steady 12v DC or light a 12v bulb with the probes on the terminal and chassis earth. Ignition needs to be on.

From the flasher the supply wire goes from the L (for Load) terminal to the switch on the column. It is Light Green with Brown tracer. With igntion on it should again show 12v.

At the switch it is connected to the Green with Red tracer to feed the LH indicators or the Green with White tracer to feed the RH indicators.

Following this route with your meter and checking all the bullet connectors will hopefully find the cause. Good Luck.

Duh! I'm sorry, guys. Of course you need to know the car. It's a 71 mgb roadster, and I believe the turn signal switch is the one with Lucas number 39552, Moss part number 141-820.

Sorry, Alec. Thanks for the site, and thanks, Rich, for the information. I've learned that patience is the key, along with a good wiring diagram. Curt

Great site, had the same question in another thread about malfunctioning turn signals. The site has been added to my favorites.
