MG MGB Technical - Unbending a fold in the fuel pipe
Hi, Just to save me some time and a goodish pipe. I have a perfectly usable fuel pipe from the petrol tank to the fuel pump on a car I'm restoring. That is - apart from one bend that is starting to fold. Is it possible to unbend or round out this fold or once it starts flattening is that it? Thanks in advance. Iwan |

There are three ways to repair the pipe. If it is within a few inches of the end then it is possible to insert a rod of the same internal diameter as the pipe and push it up the pipe until it reaches the kink unbending the pipe as you go, then with a small hammer and block work the pipe while pushing the rod into the area to support the wall. If you can't reach the kink this way then drill a hole the same size as the outside diameter of the pipe in a thick piece of steel, fit in a vice and insert the pipe unbending as you go till you reach the kink, then pull the pipe hard while gently working the pipe on the kink side of the steel until it passes through the hole. Both of these methods will work harden the pipe and render it more likely to fracture, especially when you rebend the pipe. Annealing will help relieve this - heat the pipe to cherry red and leave to cool slowly. My preferred option and one that you can use if neither of the above work is to just cut the pipe either side of the kink and fit a straight compression coupling or even a length of fuel hose. |

or just say "is it worth the bother" and stump up for a replacement. Best of... MGmike |
