MG MGB Technical - Unifilter vs K&N's

I have also posted this question elsewhere, but I am contemplating fitting Uni-filter air filters to my B, substantially cheaper here in Sydney than K&N's, and if you believe the hype they are supposed to be better! Anyone here tried them?

I have used them on dirt bikes and on a Legends race car. They should work OK on a car, I don't know how their flow rate compare but I think they are similar to Amsoil filters.

Uh, actually Amsoil no longer sells the 'foam' filters.

I have one of the 'foam' in my '97 Camry.

Now they have the brand 'Twin Air Filters'
But all for bikes, dirt and other wise.......

However, they are the first to sell a synthetic fibre air and oil filters, but don't have a full complement of them yet.

The also sell the full line of Wix filters, including racing, and Donaldson, for industrial applications.

I have installed unifilters and I am very pleased with the fit and quality. I don't have the ability to test the restriciton so have to trust the Uniflter claims.

I used the "Bobfilter" installation which made it a very economical conversion.
I was quoted AUD$120 for a pair of K&N's but have seen them on US sites for US$40 (approx AUD$50). At this local price I would not buy them on principal.

I am using also Australian brand Ramflo, and nothing to compalin about. Filter are good for 300 cfm.

The reports I've seen on foam filters is that they will run longer in adverse conditions than paper matrix but they do not do as good of job on the real fine contaminants. On a lot of industrial stuff you will see a paper air filter with an oiled foam sock over it. -- The best of both worlds.

I've seen several reports that two of the cone filters are just sufficient for a stock engine, can't imagine one working, esp on SC. Does it have a good radius backplate? That's good for 10hp itself.

FR_ Really, 10 for the filter and 10 for a horn? Should put me at 143 RWHPthen next go at it!

Probably not 10 + 10, more like the same 10, at least when the filter is clean. The cone filter forces nearly all the air to come in at a sharp angle and bend over the edge. A normal filter of adequate depth at least lets some come straight in. A good baseplate will help a bad filter, but a good filter only fixes a bad filter.
Per Vizard, a nicely flared baseplate (like MGB came with!)is worth +5.8% over the square edge. If you have 125RWhp, then you have 150 flywheel, and 5.8% is about 9hp. It could well be more here since the single carb has a lot of air through when that sucker gets wound up.In fact, the H*6 is getting a little wheezy here anyway, it really wants a bigger carb for top end, so it doesn't make any sense to strangle it with that filter.

Thanks for all the feedback!
I have fitted a pair of SU ramtubes and foam pods, all up cost delivered was only $90,(I did get a $20 discount) which is only a few dollars more than a couple of replacement K&N elements for the Coopers cans. At that price I think it is worth giving them a try!
