MG MGB Technical - vinyl for door cards

I'm not sure if this is technical or not but, hey. I want to replace the coverings on my doorcards etc. I notice that the original vinyl is quite thin and has a thin vinyl coating on top of the backing material. Off the roll vinyl I have used in the past is much thicker and has an almost spongey texture. Is this the only choice I have or is the original vinyl material still available? I'm looking for some cream vinyl to match my seats and some green for the piping.

I don't know about now, but when I restored my roadster 20 years ago I got the interior from one of the usual suspects and immediately noticed the vinyl was a lighter grade. The seats were ditto, as was the fabric covering (preferred GT seats to roadster for comfort) which seemed to have the raised ribs created by convoluted stitching rather than from what looks like a 'plush' material. Those seats have worn out, but those in my V8 which were on the car when I bought it and have done double the mileage of the roadster seats since then are still sound (although the 'plush' has worn off in places). I need to replace the seats in the roadster again, but didn't want to end up with the same 'quality' as before. At Stoneleigh I noticed a set that looked the same as the V8 in quality and weight, but unfortunately only in brown. Spurred on to look around MGBHive are advertising what they describe as OE quality, and on enquiry say they are manufactured by or for BMH, so one would hope that they would be right. Which is a long way of saying, try BMH.

I've just picked up a pair of seats from MGBhive (cream with green piping). From what they say their seats are done by a 65 year old guy who is about to retire and that they don't expect to be able to supply from the same source for much longer. I would like to think that they are not telling porkies. I could get them to supply some matching vinyl I suppose but they are asking £20 a meter which I thought was a bit steep seeing as the black I did the midget in was £6.99.

Are BMH British Motor Heritage? or someone else.

Hmmm, slightly concerning difference in stories.

Yes, British Motor Heritage who make the shells etc.

Here in Oz, and depending on the location, there are various marine fitters and upholsteres, they have good selection of vinyl. Might not be much use to you in the UK, but it is another source rather than the usual automotive outlets. Mike

Mike,
Now why didn't I think of that. We make boats in the village I live in. There must be a fitters there. Right under my nose!!

http://www.newtrim.co.uk (in Oxford) may be able to supply you with the vinyl that you require.

MAybe a bit late but, I am nearly sure that mk1 uphosltery cloth was titled "rexine". Unfortunatly I can't tell where to localise such a trimming equippement, it's much much thinner than mk2's and I would be very interested in.
