MG MGB Technical - Voltage regulator or relay?

I have a 77 mgb roadster. I am having issues with what I think is a relay or voltage regulator. I have narrowed it down to a black cylinder shaped unit that is mounted forward of the fuse box on the passenger (left) side. I know that this is where the problem is because, before it went out I used to have to fumble with it to get things working. It also shows that it's been hot.

It seems to control power to the cooling fans, turn signals, Tachometer, fuel guage, and temp guage.

I have looked in the victoria british catalog and cannot seem to narrow down which unit to buy.

If anyone has any experience with this unit, please help. Please e-mail me your response in case I miss your post. Thank you!

Bill. What you are speaking of is the ignition relay, located on the Right side of the car, inner fender, just ahead of the fuse box. (Car "sides" are described as seated in the driver's seat unless other wise noted and driver/passanger side has little meaning when there are both right and left hand drive models in common use.)

Yes, the ignition relay goes bad, as does its companion starter relay which is located on the right side, inner fender, behind the coil.

Replace as necessary and I always keep a spare relay in the parts bin.

Bill, Don't know where you get your parts, but Gordon Strickland at The B Hive in Clemson should have the relay in stock if you are looking for a quick replacement.

It is a standard relay, used in many modern vehicles, available at any parts store for $5-12, rather than the $30 and out-of-stock from the specialists. The replacement will be square, as were some of the factory ones. There is a circuit diagram on the relay, so you can match it up if needed. The terminal numbers are DIN standard, so any relay with the same terminals will work. Last one I got was listed for a Jeep. Relay contacts in this relay come rated anywhere from 20 to 40 amps; if you have a choice, go high, most are 30 or 35A.
