MG MGB Technical - vw engine in a 76 mgb

Does anyone know anything about putting a vw engine in a 76 mgb? I know that some have put a v6 or a v8 in theirs but i'd like to go with a nice small four cylinder that i can squeeze some good horsepower out of that won't break the bank (i know that vw engines can be built brand new fairly cheaply, respectivly). also, i would like to mate it with a five or six speed gearbox. does anyone know of this being done before or know of a way that it can be done? any help would be much appreciated.

Aaron: the inexpencive Water cooled VW motors are front wheel drive, finding an adaptor will probably be the expencive and hard part so by all means locate the kit first. If you can't find a kit to do it, makeing your own will offsett any savings seen in the VW motor."That won't break the bank" the cost to be the first to do any swap can be incredible.RIC

Might be worth taking a look at the Ford 2.3 Turbo (I think there's something inthe archives). Parts availability is always a good thing in this kind of venture.

Honda S2000 has lots of power for sure - at 9,000 rpm. That might cause a bit of complication with gear ratios, I expect. And if you really want Honda S2000 power, why not leave the engine where it is, and have a warranty, etc?

PS Buick used to make a V8 which can be made to fit. And in an MGB, Buick = quick...

The latest issue of Grassroots Motorsports magazine has a piece on an mgb roadster/Volvo 4 cylinder conversion. Turned out very nice and there are thousands of those rear wheel drive 4 cyl Volvos around. Anything is possible............
