MG MGB Technical - Weber side-draft?
Can anyone confirm that the Weber side-draft carb will fit on an 80B? Will the air filter clear the brake booster? Thanks! |

Yes, one can get a short manifold and aircleaner that will allow the DCOE to fit the later cars with the brake booster. Unless you have done many mods to the engine, I doubt that it will make much of a difference. You would need to change the exhaust manifold, camshaft and igition/distributer. A lot of work. The '80 18V engine is not the best suited to a sidedraft Weber without mods to the engine. HTH Ron |

Ron, I have a Peter Burgess fast road cylinder head and I might install a Piper 285 cam (and during winter my engine will be rebored to 1868cc). Do you think a sidedraft carb (I'm talking about a Dellorto 40 DHLA, which is very similar to a Weber 40 DCOE) will give a difference? Regards, A |

Forgot to mention, My car is a '65 RHD roadster, I have a 'long' manifold and will be getting a K&N deep filter for it. My block is a 18GB one, that's modified (you can see this at Peter Burgess' site) to make sure the exhaust valves don't hit the block. Regards, A |

I had put a new side drift Weber and manifold on my 79 MGB it fit tight but it fit. Now it and the manifold is sitting on the self. I went to a down draft instead. I was told it when I bought my new engine that a down draft would run better. So I dicided to go with it. My self I do not see that much diferentce in the performance of the 2. |

Might want to be a little careful with short DCOE manifolds. To make the turns from the centerline of the DCOE to the centerlines of the ports entail a firly sharp turn in a short area. While I haven't personally looked at it, cranking the mixture around like that can't (or at least I think it can't ) be too godd for flow and mixture homogeny. You could use a longer manifold like the long TWM or Cannon 801 if you switch back to the non- boosted brake master cylinder. pedal effort goes up- but that's your call |
