MG MGB Technical - Weep Hole

Hello all,

I replaced my 72B radiator, all hoses, oil cooling hoses and cleaned up my engine compartment a bit while doing so and so of course once I got it all back together my water pump appears to be shot. Where is the weep hole on the water pump? Is it underneath - I've never seen one so I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. I'm just assuming the thing has sprung a leak since coolant drips from the crossmember when the engine is warmed up. (That'll teach me to try and do preventative maintenance!) Thanks!
Greg Smela

Yes, the weep hole is underneath the pump.
Try to find the cast-iron pump, rather than
the aluminum replacements. Make sure it isn't
just the water pump
gasket, or a loose hose clamp first.

It must be the time to replace 1972 water pumps. The '72 GT I just bought and changed the fuel pump on; when started, coolant was dripping out of the water pump. I shook the fan and there is definite movement in the pump shaft.

If you have trouble finding the cast iron pump, don't lose too much sleep over it. The replacement cast iron pump I put on a couple of years ago lasted about 500 miles. The aluminum one I replaced it with has lasted since then.

Well, I found a small mirror and it looks like it is the gasket but I may as well replace the pump while I have it off since I *know* it will fail as soon as I replace the gasket! Thanks, all.

Just a word of caution. I've heard that there is a problem with aftermarket water pumps. They sometimes have the impellor searate from the shaft. So everything looks normal. The shaft spins with the fan, but the impellor doesn't. Instant overheating.

The fit of the cast alloy pumps can be really poor, I had to some drilling and machining to get one to fit, and it started dripping very occasionally within a few hundred miles. Bought a cast-iron replacement for when it got much worse - that was several years and many thousands of miles ago and it is still in its box.

If you have a cast iron pump worth fixing, you can exchange it with the folks at World Wide in Wisconsin. The rebuild several components on our MGs and do a pretty decent job. You can contact them at http://www.mailbag.com/users/nosimport/

I am starting to get that squeaking from the water pump that if I remember right from my AH Sprite and MGA days many years ago means that my water pump bearing is starting to go. Expect I should just go ahead and get one now so I will at least have a backup that works. Any specific sources for new ones. i.e. Moss, yes, VB, no, etc. etc.
