MG MGB Technical - What ! There,s No SuchThing as Warped Brake Discs

Hi all I hope everybody is enjoying this fine weather even here in the U.K.
I have recently had problems with rather bad steering wheel vibration, especially while braking, yet there was no pulsing or any vibration felt on the brake pedal.
Kingpins were shot so I changed them, replaced them with new, from MGOC the ones with the needle bearing, Went for a run and found the vibration still there, but much better.
Although I knew the Brake Discs/Rotors were still in Spec with hardly any wear on them, they had been in fact on the car when I bought her.
So bought new Discs and mounting bolts etc fitted them.
I went on a run to try them out,and HEY PRESTO they were perfect, Job Done.
I know some of you guys have said,Discs/Rotors do not Warp,I have read the article on the subject in the Archives myself, But would just like to say my Discs were warped,No build up of carbon from the pads the discs were as I have said still in spec,
So this is one case of Warped Discs/Rotors

Hope this may be of help to somebody in the future

Malcolm,
in the thread called 'BRAKE JUDDER' in this forum Allan believes his discs were of poor manufacturer quality and based on the poor and abysmal quality of some modern made parts it's difficult to argue against that being a possible cause to his if not yours
Nigel Atkins

Brake judder, if caused by discs can easily be detected if the car is put on the rollers of the MOT brake test bed. It will show up as a rise and fall of the needle on the brake test gauge. If it is excessive it is a MOT failure.

When I purchased my '67B, back in '72 from the original owner, the brakes shook the steering wheel to the point that it was difficult to hold on to. It would seem the young lady only applied the brakes about 15" before every stop sign and light. When I went to replace the original discs, I realized that the they had taken on the shape of a potato chip. Having worked in service centers, with both drum and disc brake cutting lathes, on which I turned over a thousand of each, I can say with some degree of certainty that discs do indeed warp. I've seen some that had actually turned blue from frozen calipers and couldn't even be touched for a hour or more until they had cooled down. I've also seen some that have completely worn through one side of the disc! RAY
