MG MGB Technical - Where's oil coming from part #3
My thanks to Ronald, CA, Chris, Essex & Les,AZ for solving my problem. Massive oil leak from left rear corner of the head. Ronald diagnosed the problem as a plug missing in an oil galley, which was the case. Chris suggested tapping a thread and using a set screw, which I did. Les provided the exact size of the hole and suggested repairs. I cut off a 1/4" X 20 tap and fitted a small vise grip to it. Very carefully ran a few threads and with an allen wrench and some JB Weld inserted the set screw. Doubt that this will ever come loose and accomplished it in less than thirty minutes. This is further proof that all smoke coming from under the "bonnet" is not always the fault of Mr. Lucas. Thanks to all. |

Jim, Glad to hear it turned out to be an easy fix. If you have any remaining worries about swarf, I would install a magnetic oil drain plug. (If you haven't already.) I find a bit of dark magnetized "paste" on mine at every oil change. |
