MG MGB Technical - which exhaust?

'ello all, - again
while motoring to work with my 79b daily driver, i was surprised by preparation for repaving of the county road. a 8' band of blacktop had been cut out to a depth of 3" all across the road. i bottomed out, and immediately heard the deep throaty sound of a broken exhaust pipe. lasted 25 yrs and 11 months!
now i'm looking at replacing it; after the cat but to the tail, as it were. for a total of less than 300 (boss'imposed rule)- shipping included.
do i go with stock, peco, vb's or moss' free flow? add K&N filters; 1 1/2 or 3"? everything else is stock, except the emissions is gone.
work needs to be done in the driveway with my assistants, who turn 3 & 5 in a couple of weeks, and will drop the pirate sword anyday to put wrench to 'b, even got 'em to tell ma that with a gt we could all ride together!
wise suggestions?
thanks, - again

The Moss system installed on the 70 MGB had a bracket that had to be untacked and re-welded about 30 degrees in a new orientation. It was also helpful to have the car on a rack, and to lower it onto a jack to do the final 'adjusting' of the exhaust system to clear the body, and also not to hang down.

The sound is ok, it certainly sounds like an MGB, but others have fondness for other systems. I personally can't imagine installing one on the ground, but perhaps I'm simply aging too fast!

My honest recomendation if you plan on keeping the catalytic converter is to go for the Falcon Stainless Big Bore system. It fits about as easily as any with the plus that it is a direct bolt onto the original cat. Has only a single box at the rear, so you don't drag the center section over bumps. Sounds pretty good and lasts a long time.

It's a bit over your budget, but will last longer than a mild steel system so overall should be more economical.

I've used the early version of this system on a 1974 after looking carefully at all the different options.

If you plan on keeping the original manfolds on either a late or early car, these systems are currently the best bet for ease of installation and longevity.

That said, these systems are all jig welded and not trial fit, so it is not unusual to find one where the fitter did not take adequate care before zapping it with the MIG gun. Usually a muffler shop can correct any misalignment, so don't kill yourself in the driveway if the system doesn't fit up correctly.

Here in the UK you can sue the Highway Authority in cases like this.

'ello all,
thanks, falcon at vb is affordable, a bit over the limit with brackets & shipping - but it wouldn't be tradition without exceeding the limit! plus i have difficulty staying off the roads until the salt is completely washed off so stainless is a bonus.
my assistants learned to rhyme when checking the sills on the 'b; rusty crusty.
oh stan, as for the authorities, the less they look over my 'b the better!
enjoy,
brady
(and i still have an unspent gift certficate at moss, hee hee)
