MG MGB Technical - Whining noise
I have a newly rebuilt motor 3,000+/- miles in my 74B. It has developed a whining noise which seems to be coming from the front of the motor. I took the belt off to check the alt. and water pump but the noise is still there. It changes as the rpm changes, not extremely loud but can be heard in the cockpit. It has new double row timing gears, chain, tensioner. |

I have noticed one more sympton to the whining noise. When I start the car after sitting overnight the noise doesn't start until after the engine has been running for 10-15 seconds. |

Could be cam gears, crank or cam cogs or chain, distributor, possibly oil pump, not much else left. |

May be caused by the cam timing gears being offset from one another. There are thin shim washers used to make sure the gears are in the same plane. |

If the timing chain is too tight, it will whine, but I don't see how it can be, as the tensioner is automatic. |

Is it the sound of your wife in the passenger seat reflecting off the windshield as she is trying to talk over the engine noise ? Easiest thing is to give her what she wants |

My plan is working... |

I would begin as Martin and John suggest, and in either case the timing chain cover will need to be removed. Begin with a look at the timing gear alignment, then insure the automatic tensioner is responding. Regards, Larry C. '74 B/GT & '69 midget |
