MG MGB Technical - Window winder upgrade

I broke the darned winder on my 'B. Not bad, I guess, after 29 years of service. The knob snapped off in my hand. Anyway, yesterday I chanced upon a couple of Austin Americas in a junkyard and Presto, interchangable winders. They seem to be a better quality, too. The pivot is metal and not the plastic that broke on my, presumably, originals. Can't say what I paid because I got them with a bunch of other stuff (including a BL AM radio!!!) for $40.00.

I'm glad I fixed it too, because there's a freak, raging snowstorm going on here (Montreal). Forcasting up to 6" of snow by tomorrow morning. And I have to drive my poor 'B 100 miles home this afternoon. I guess I should have left the snowtires on. God bless The Great White North and all who live there.

I've always wondered why you can't find chrome replacements for the OEM plastic window winders. (At least for the early cars. Moss has 'em for later Bs.) The plastic ones inevitably snap, especially in cold weather. At least VB carries nice chrome inside door handles that look really sharp and fit the original style.

The standard window winder handles are common to a number of other cars including certain years of Mini. A number of Mini specialists market pollished aluminium window winder handles that I understand will fit the MGB. It may be that some of the mg specialists have these as well.

Also, there is another, plastic, alternative replacement handle for 1968-80 MGBs available from Victoria British, Pg.66, #10-820, $15.95 USD, which I have been using the last 3-4 yrs and which is much tougher than the OE plastic handles. I post this info for those with later cars also looking for a longer lasting crank. FWIW.
