MG MGB Technical - Wiper Stalk to an earlier car
I would like to ‘upgrade’ to a wiper stalk on the steering column - the only problem is that it is a mark 2 GT with the early binnacle and the single sided shroud. Can it be done, if so how? Thanks! |

The twin stalks have a larger cowl and for RHD at least the main instruments were reduced in size from 4" to 80mm apparently to accommodate it, as did American spec when the Mk2s got twin stalks. Oddly for the final dash in 77 LHD went back to 4" while RHD stayed at 80mm. You may have to change the whole dash for the early rubber bumper type.
The column and hence the steering wheel may also be an issue, depending on what year your Mk2 is. The same column seems to have been used from 70 to 76, and the splines to the wheel were the same even though the wheel spokes changed a couple of times. But anything is possible given enough time, money and ingenuity. |

Thanks, it is an early Mark 2 (or a late mark 1) hailing from ‘69 with toggle switch dash. Your reply is, rather, where I got to but am hoping some previous thread or someone on the forum has tackled such a mod. It is a bit of a well cared for mongrel so there are few issues around originality and it would be more intuitive have these on a stalk rather than reach across to a toggle. |

I did it on my 1969 car using stalk switches from a Mini. I fitted them with the wiper on the right and the turn sigmals on the left so I wouldn't get muddled when changing from our modern car.
As Paul said the problem is the cowl to cover the stalk switches. The correct MGB one won't fit due to the shape of the early dashboard and the larger instruments. After playing about with all sorts of bodged jobs, my son gave me a cheap 3D printer for Christmas and I managed (with his help) to make a bespoke one which works well. See the photo. |
