MG MGB Technical - Wire Wheel Hub Question (stupid?)

O.K., I had two of my mechanics look at it and I can't figure it out either - how do i get the grease caps off on a wire wheel car ? it is recessed and I thought I could pry it through the little hole in the splined part but no .
HBOL , Chilton , factory BMC manual all just say ' remove grease cap ' - B.S.! .

I want to repack the front wheel bearings , please be specific on how to remove this doggone cap .

Thanx ,

Front or back?
Back are like core plugs, Front just need a screwdiver putting in to ease the edge of the caps in, then you can pull the cap out with pliers.

I remove mine using a long threaded rod with a tall nut backed with a second jam nut. thread the tool on to the grease cap stud. Chuck the works in a slide hammer and your set.

Nate, the correct caps for wires have a stud or bolt welded head first to the cap, and it is this threaded section which makes removal simple.Steve M describes correct procedure, but just screwing on a nut and grabbing with multi-grips will work. If you have caps from steel wheels pushed in there, you can drill a hole to provide a start for an easy -out, or a bent file tang to grab. Also, an electrode could be welded on, and grabbed with pliers, if you have the rig. Replace with correct caps, or get a bolt, say 1/4 or 5/16 welded head first to the centre of the cap, to avoid this problem next time.

Oh, and Nate, it isn't a stupid question at all.

Indeed. The only stupid questions are the ones unasked.

Okay , thanx ! since my home shop has all metric hardware (where I work on the MG) what size bolt do I need ? I have loads of inch hardware here but will need to take it home .

I read on the MG Experience BBS where you should scrap the spacer and shims , just adjust like any other car .

I feel like a dummy asking such basic questions ~ wait untill I open up the bottom end :-) .

NSH, One of the nuts for the thermostat cover is about an inch thick. The threads on one end will fit the stud in the center of the grease cap. The other end will fit the long bolts that secure the stock air filters to the carbs. Just screw it all together, clamp on some vice grips and apply some gentle persuasion with a hammer.
Mack Sneed

Keep the shims, once you have set up the bearings with the right gap and torque once, it should only take you an extra 5 minutes next time.
