MG MGB Technical - Wire wheel paint
Is there a non Moss paint color for wire wheels? An off the shelf at Home Depot, etc. paint? It is for a 1966 mgb roadster. Thanks for your help. |

Dave. I used Rustoleum silver paint the last time I painted wire wheels. Do not remember whether I used a zinc primer or other primer. As long as the wheels are all the same color, they look fine. You might also consider the color "aluminum" to decide which color best suits your car's paint color. Depending on the condition of the wheels, having them professionally sandblasted before priming and painting may be in order. Relatively inexpensive and does not leave any rust under the newly painted surface. Les |

Dave, you have quite a few options here once you start to look around...After looking around I sprayed mine with 'detail silver' from eastwood and have been happy by it...you can find it at eastwoodco.com and do a search for wire wheel paint. I have seen attractive silvers from por-15 and DuPont as well. I have some extra advice if you need it...After painting them, I wanted to protect them from having the grease from your splines work up the spokes...To do this I bought spray silicon and gave the inner hub a quick spray. Smearing silicon caulk is another option but a clump could act as a (non)-balancing weight. |

I spray mine with Hammerite smooth silver. The factory aluminium finish is a little too grey and dull to work with dark BRG paint. The prep takes the time however I prefer to do this that put chrome wires on as once they rust you are beaten. |
