MG MGB Technical - Wire wheel rear axle - Convert to Bolt on??
| Hi Guys I am having a bit of a problem getting my 6" alloy rims and wide tyres between the rear guards on my GT rebuild. After a bit of horse trading I am now the owner of an unwanted tube type wire wheel rear axle. These are narrower by about 50mm. It seems to me if I can convert the WW rear to bolt on, I will have gained the clearance that I need. Any one done it?, problems? Thanks Ian f |

| Ian- The halfshafts are different lengths. You'll need to have a machine shop adapt the hubs. |

| Ian, the w/w axle with bolt-on hubs bolted on will work great. Assuming your 6" wheels have the std. 22mm offset, you'll just need to have a set of spacers made up, to go between the brake drums and the wheels. The spacer on the RHS of my car is about 7/16" thick and that on the LHS is ~1/4", and the wheels sit in the fenders (w/o flaring or rolling) just fine. The tires are 195/60/15. The only slight PITA here is that you'll need to have longer wheel studs pressed into the hubs. In fact I reckon a regular bolt-on axle might be too wide, so don't be so hasty to discard your old unit. |

| Ian, I'm running a WW axle with bolt on hubs. I simply bolted the 4 bolt hubs on, no modifications to the axle what so ever. I didn't need any spacers, although before I re-bushed my leaf springs I ran a 1/4" spacer on the driver side. I also didn't need longer studs even with the spacer, as I bought lug nuts that recess into the wheels (this only works with certain types of wheels). Any how I'm running 205/60's on 14x7 inch rims. No rubbing, but I did roll the inner lip of the fender. Go for it. The only real problem (which I don't view as a problem and in fact may help the handling) is that the front track width may be a tad bit wider than the back. I'm not certain of that though. | Thanks fellas, Seems as if there is another problem solved! Sad part is though - I have already rebuild the original tube type axle, all new bearings, seals, sandblast and paint, thrusts, dif gears re-set, drums turned, new brake cylinders. <sob> Why didnt I think of this earlier! Looks like a swap over session on the way. Ian F |
