MG MGF Technical - *** TYRE SURVEY 2 *** The good, the bad & the ugly

It has been 5 years since the last BBS tyre survey - and in that time, some great tyres have come and gone. Thankfully, some truely dire tyres have also been consigned to the great tyre dump in the sky too - but what are the best tyres for the MGF and TF? I think it is time to get a new list of 'approved' BBS tyres, and those to be avoided like the plague!

Form as below:

I'd be interested to know wear rates. How many miles did they last front and back? (Roughly and assuming they had worn out rather than been damaged)

FWIW

obviously this is entirely subjective, and only based on my expectations of the car, as i haven't got a previous set or sets to compare against...

MG Model (F or TF): F
tyre Survey:
Front: Continental Premium Contact
Rear: Pirelli P7000
Wheel size:15"
Profile- Front:185/55
Profile- Rear:205/50
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 7
Subjective comments: Jury out on this combination, not especially convinced by steering feel in wet, although grip at front progressive, had a couple of unexpected 'step outs' on rear in wet, but catchable.
in the dry seem fine, bit understeery, but that could be due to running 185's - same proviso re: steering feel.

hope this helps

Yes, availability - I'll add that data when the results are back in :o)

John - wear rates - good question! Rears wear faster - perhaps we should be asking that question too.

IIRC I managed to squeeze 25k miles out of the NCTs. The Bridgestones went in about 15k (but included competition and track use) - and the Goodyears tend to wear at a similar rate (again with a good amount of track use)

MG Model (F):
Wheel size: 15”
Profile- Front: 195/50 Toyo Proxes T1-S
Profile- Rear: 205/50 Goodyear NCT-3

8.5/10 for the Toyo’s great for the money except the 205/50 T1-S does not seem to be available any more. Understand the T1-R has a reinforced tyre wall (tried them on a Elise & were really good. So I'm going for the T1-R in future. Wear rate has been ok since setting toe-in to 0 degrees, 1st set lasted 3 months with factory tracking settings!

6.5/10 for Goodyear’s, on the basis of good wear rates, handling predictable and so much better than the below nightmares they replaced. I’ve had about 21K from the rears although due for replacement now.

0/10 Unknown budget tyre originally fitted to rear of car, messed up handling so much the garage rebuilt rear suspension trying to fix the problem (I let them do it, it was free after all). Suspicion was poorly reinforced tyre walls.

Cheers, Russ.

Subjective comments: Good tyres but didn’t suit the TF that wel. Grip seemed to decrease and made the TF feel more twitchy over time. Dangerous in snow. Car didn’t feel as well stable or as well fixed to the road as with GS-D2 fitted. Performance in the wet wasn’t as good as with the D2 either.

Subjective comments: Frightful tyre. Little grip on anything other than a perfectly dry road. Even small amounts of power would send to car spinning in the wet. Wear rate was very good, but suspect this was due to them being so hard, and thus the poor grip levels.

Subjective comments: Brilliant on dry and wet. Even on fresh snow they performed well. Always felt safe with this combination and I was thinking that teh fronts were going to outlive the rear tyres by about 7000 miles until a zealous MOT mechanic failed the one front tyre which meant replacing four tyres at once. Forced me to change tyre preference (see next Block) The ZV3 is much softer than the ZV1 but the grip is exceptional for a road tyre that has to perform in both wet and dry conditions. 7000 miles on the rears with hard driving, might have got 20000 out of the fronts were it not for the tracking.

Additional benefits: fantastic arch-filling looks and better comfort. Drawbacks: footwell panels must be altered, not road legal... :-(

Hi Per,
I'm glad you posted about that setup (I've had it in mind since you posted about some time ago).
I've already had the same widths, although lower profiles on my former F.

What do you meanby "footwells altered" ? Is it just the old hairdryer trick to slighly push back the plastic liner, or a bigger job ? Do the tyres only scrub on full lock in reverse, or more badly ?
And by "not road legal" ? My F passed 2 MOT's with 225/40 & 205/45 tyres...

Cheers,
Fabrice
Fabrice

Hi Fabrice,

The footwell panels modifications needed are more extensive than the old liner/hairdryer trick. Even with the liner taken out completely, the wheels rub on the footwell panel on close to full lock (you won't even reach full lock!), both in reverse and going forward.

By "not road legal" I meant that you will be outside of manufacturer's specifications. Your wheels will be much bigger than the standard ones and this will affect your speedo's readings (although, intrestingly, I had the car timed at 80, 100 and 120 Km/h and the speedo readings where spot on!!)

I note with interest what you are saying about the "Contrôle technique" here in Belgium not saying anything about your bigger tyres... Did you mention it to them, or did you just sneak through... ;-) ?

As regards the look (d'enfer!!!) I could send some pictures to anyone willing to put them up on a website (Dieter?).

Tony Thompson

Hi Per, Thanks for your reply.
That "extensive panel modifications" sounds indeed more serious than the hairdryer trick :-( Can you please explain what had to be done exactly ?

I'm not surprised at all that the speedo is now spot on with your bigger tyres...
According to my calculations, the overall diameter increased by a little less than 4% (between the original 205/50-15 and your 225/45-16). It's a well known fact that almost every car speedo over-estimates real speeds... now you've just corrected the error ;o)

For the "contrôle technique", I passed twice (2002 and 2003) with 225 rear and 205 front tyres. I didn't mention it to them, and I don't know if they noticed it !
For when is due your first visit ?

And for pictures, I am of course willing to see them !
you can send them please at fabrice_dot_bihay_AT_advalvas_DOT_be

No problem Tony :o)

I am going to rebuild the tyre section on mgf.ultimatemg.com but having the data in more than one place is never a bad idea IMO :o)

Thanks for all the feedback so far - I'll go through the figures later, but it looks as though there are some clear favourites amongst owners :o)

Hi Fabrice,

The modification, which I had done by a good panel repair shop (cost me 500 €), was to straigthen the "step" that you see on the panel at the back (rear) of the wheel arch, as seen on this picture (thanks Andy!):
http://www.sfforever.co.uk/pictures/mainpage_29/id778.jpg

Once that step is flattened, you have the extra 3 or 4 cm that you need to fit the bigger wheel. I then also cut away a bit of the liner to get rid of the final bit of rubbing I still experienced on full lock (couldn't get that liner to be flush with the panel). Of course, if you cut the liner, you must apply plenty of panel protection gunk on the panel (bitumen actually, you find that at Auto 5 - Belgium's poor equivalent to Halfords, for those not familiar with this country), to keep good rust protection and sound proofing.

I will also add, as regards the rear wheels, that the clearance at the top lip of the rear wheel arch is very small on full compression of the suspension. My car is fine, but I could imagine that another car with slighty different tolerances could experience a need to roll back or cut off a bit of that lip (and remember that the F still had that rubber protection strip on that lip, which was deleted as a cost cutting measure on the TF).

My first visit at the "contrôle technique" is due next year, but I have another set of wheels with the original tyres on... ;-)

I'll get some good pictures and send them to you!

Cheers,

Per
Per

hum ! that's serious mods you've done to your TF ! I'm looking forward to see the pictures, but I'm not sure I would undertake such big mods to fit higher profile tyres...
Did the panel repair shop cut and weld, or "only" reshape the panel ?
My TF has Xpower (Eibach) springs, so the clearance inside arches is a big issue, but I think your car has these springs too ?
Now I understand why you ask about the "Contrôle technique" ;o) Anyway, with or without original tyres, the "bitumen" hides the to mods inside...

Anyone else got impressions on the Continentals? From my brief encounters with TFs with these tyres, I would rate them significantly higher than NCT-3s...
Rob Bell

My TF135 came with Contis as OEM on the 15". Ran them for about 13000 miles, never a single dodgy moment in wet or dry. Changed to TOYOs because I've used them before and because of price. I hear complaints about Contis but I had none - I have used NCT3, GY F1, Conto, TOYO on the F & TF. I don't do track days so have no feedback on Contis-on-Track.

Car currently at Mike Saturs having all sorts done, and earlier had an interesting chat with Mike about the current tyres (those fitted when I bought it).

Front are NCT3, and have the worn inside edge. Rear are a Dunlop type I had never heard of before but are apparently recommended for the MGF (might be the SP Sport 9000 that Fabrice mentions above, but obviously I cannot just pop out and check at the moment). Handling has been fine except for a wobble on hard cornering. However, would not be inclined to say anything because clearly the suspension needs the work it is currently receiving. Having the NCT3's replaced with the Dunlops and, with suspension sorted, will report back.

I fitted BF Goodridge G-profiler tyres to my VVC Mgf . These I have found excellent in the dry and good in the wet too. Pembury track day was very wet and my car experienced good handling. On dry track days the rubber does get sticky :-)

Cost wise I believe they were approx £60 fitted each inc nitrogen gas instead of air.

Definitely inspire confidence, though tracking, poly tie-bar bushes and Techspeed's Bilsteins all got done at the same time. Rears have lasted about 15k so far and have 4mm left. Addition of fronts this morning, even at silly garage pressure makes for better feedback than the Avons; I also hope for better turn-in once scrubbed-in. Interestingly, I looked at incresing to 195, but the 195/50 only comes as a GS D3, which is something I didn't find mentioned on here.

Was there only one other person as mad as i buying khumo tyres???

Cant remember the sizes but they are standard fit 15'ers great in the dry absolutely usless in the wet breaking and turning, plus i have gone through two sets now in just under 20k now looking for alternatives garage i normally use keeps stating that they have to have the good year 5's on or contis, i drove a TF insurance pool car brand new with contis and thought them even worse than my khumos!!!(my yokies on my 200 brake GTE Astra lasted longer than that!!!)
Rick

Been running Marangoni tyres for ages now and am very happy with them. Have run Michelin Pilots, Dunlop err G2s i think (ditch finders) and the inevitable NCT3s in my time, but below are the tyres i have had on my 16" wheels (as it was too long ago for me to remember my specific experiences of the 15" tyres i had).

Marangoni Zeta Linea (current)

MG Model (F or TF): 1.8 MPi

Profile- Rear: 205x45
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 8
Subjective comments: Need a fair bit of scrubbing in (feel a little vague during this period and tend to tram line a bit), look good, last set ran for 20K (front) and 18K (rear - puncture forced replacement, plenty of tread left).
Cost(optional): £60.00 fitted
Bought from(optional): Elsenham tyre + exhaust

I'm on my 2nd set of these tyres - generally very happy with them. Prior to the Lineas i had...

Marangoni Zeta ESC

MG Model (F or TF): 1.8 MPi
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 205x45
Profile- Rear: 205x45
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 9
Subjective comments: Very good all rounder, sadly no longer available, last set ran for 20K miles (rear), 24K miles (front), not very interesting tread pattern though.
Cost(optional): £65.00 fitted
Bought from(optional): Elsenham tyre + exhaust

My favourite tyre to date. Before these i had...

-------------

Goodyear Eagle F1 (GS2)

MG Model (F or TF): 1.8 MPi
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 215x40
Profile- Rear: 215x40
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 7.5
Subjective comments: Expensive, not quite as good in the wet as the Marangonis, but do not need scrubbing in. Didn't last long (circa 14K miles)
Cost(optional): £105.00 fitted
Bought from(optional): Elsenham tyre + exhaust

Not as good an all rounder as the Zeta ESCs i felt, very dissapointed in the lifespan (although poor tracking at the time had something to do with this I reckon). Generally feel that they are very overpriced.

---------------

Fulda Y3000

MG Model (F or TF): 1.8 MPi
Wheel size: 16"
Profile- Front: 205x45
Profile- Rear: 205x45
Rating (0-10, where 0= truely dangerous and 10= Superb!): 8
Subjective comments: Reasonable tyre, good price, and 20K miles out of both the front and rears, sadly no longer available
Cost(optional): £75.00 fitted
Bought from(optional): Motobuild

These came with the wheels (from Motobuild originally). A pretty good tyre and would still be using them if i could get hold of them. If it ain't broke and all that...

Scarlet Fever

Summary so far... wow! This is looking like the largest response to date for a tyre survey!

Over 70 entries so far - 90% of which are for MGFs. TF owners, where are you???

The largest pool of data are for the following tyres:

15.5% Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2
13% Toyo Proxes T1-S
12% Goodyear Eagle Touring NCT-3
9% Goodyear Eagle GS-D3
9% Avon
8% Toyo Proxes T1-R
6.5% Bridgestone RE720
5% Bridgestone S-02
4% Yokohama A359

Of these, the clear looser was the Goodyear NCT-3 - which will come as no surprise to anyone. They're no longer available, so good ridence!

Will collate the scores soon - but it would be very very helpful to hear from more TF owners!!!

Cheers

The scores, listed in Alphabetical order (number in brackets indicates the number of responses for that particular tyre):

Avon ZV1 (1): 7.0
Avon ZR2 (1): 9.5
Avon ZV3 (4): 8.1
Avon ZZ3 (1): 8.0

Bridgestone RE720 (5): 7.4
Bridgestone S-02 (3): 9.8

Toyo Proxes T1-R (6): 8.75
Toyo Proxes T1-S (10): 8.6
Toyo Trampio GWN (1): 9.0

Yokohama A359 (3): 8.3

Overall average score: 7.7

So the winner, once again, is the superlative Bridgestone S-02 - which remains available in the non-standard 205/45 R16 size. With an average score of 9.8 from three respondants, it appears to be the class of the field.

Then there is a big gap, but two tyres really stand out: the Toyo T1-R - a big favourite for its performance and reasonable cost, and the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2 which ties with the Toyo T1-S on 8.6 points out of 10.

Many of the other tyres simply haven't had enough respondants to really get a good feel for their efficacy - but if you are looking for new tyres for your F or TF, you are probably best advised to go knocking on the door of your local Toyo supplier and buy yourself the excellent T1-R.

Merry Christmas all! :o)

Subjective comments: Excellent after the NCT-3. Feeling is good at the wheel, excellent grip in dry and very good grip at wet. Highly recommended for 15". Only concern they were not available as 185/55 in Istanbul so had the 195/50 fitted as fronts.

Oh I wish that I had read this tyre survey before today! My mgf has Goodyear NCT 3's and I have just discovered how badly they handle on anything less than a dry surface. I now need a front bumper (any for sale?) together with a couple of wheels, offside headlamp, front indicator etc. Lost it on damp road following exit from roundabout just as I straightened and started to accelerate. At about 35mph I argued with the armco. Once the repairs are done I shall assiduously study the results of this survey and lash out on a fresh set of whatever is best.

AP "and the inevitable NCT3s in my time, but below are the tyres i have had on my 16" wheels (as it was too long ago for me to remember my specific experiences of the 15" tyres i had)."
Wasn't it Nov '96 when they took you out in the snow at Hickleton??
Happy Xmas everyone, be safe.

Have just fitted two new Khumo Ecsta Sport's to the front (KU3's i think, they are a brand new tyre from khumo) Absolutely superb 100 pc better than the others in wet and dry.

8.0 dry and wet

Merry Christmas all - I've used 4 brands of tyres over the past 5 years - Goodyear Eagle GS-D2, Falken, Yokohama and Bridgestone.
Goodyear - blowout, poor road holding and too soft,
Falken - too soft - chopped out very quickly
Yokohama - side wall failure
Bridgestone - originally Grid II now running Potenza GIII. A harder compound than their top tyre therefore a firmer ride.
